Chocolate Can Soothe A Sore Throat
According to Professor Alyn Morice from Hull University, there is some strong evidence in place to prove that cacao is very effective in soothing a sore throat.
Professor Alyn Morice is a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Cough. He is an expert in cough and respiratory medicine, and head of cardiovascular and respiratory studies at the University of Hull.
In his study called ROCOCO, he claims that chocolate can calm coughs. “We have just seen the results of the largest real-world study of an over-the-counter cough remedy ever undertaken in Europe,” Morice recently explained to the Daily Mail. “This proves that a new medicine which contains cocoa is better than a standard linctus. The head-to-head comparison found that patients taking the chocolate-based medicine had a significant improvement in symptoms within two days.”
And this was not the first study that shows that chocolate can soothe a sore throat.
Previously, researchers at Imperial College in London found that theobromine, an alkaloid in cacao, is better at suppressing the urge to cough than codeine — an established ingredient in cough medicines.
How To Choose The Right Chocolate
Go for dark chocolate with a high percentage of cacao. The higher the percentage, the less sugar it will contain. I recommend 70% or higher. I also choose one that is dairy free to maximize the benefits of eating cacao. My kids also like it, and they are very natural.
