Make your own slushies in less than 5 minutes without using a blender with this instant magic slushie hack!
Instant Magic Slushie Hack
I recently found out about this super cool hack. You can freeze your juice almost instantly, and make your own delicious slushies without making a mess at all. The trick is to freeze the juice using ice cubes and salt. It looks like a magic trick. So cool!
So I decided to give this creative hack a try and my kids LOVED the idea. We had so much fun making our own slushies and finding out we can freeze liquids with just a simple trick.
For this recipe you just need ice, salt, and your favorite juice
No blender is required so don’t worry about cleaning up a big mess. Enjoy a sweet treat with your kids and have fun making your own slushies. You can use any juice you like. Try different flavors or even mixed them up. My kids loved watching how the juice freezes and looks like a magic trick.
This is really the perfect fun drink for a hot summer day or when you don’t want to deal with messy melty ice pops. My kids love ice pops but when we are inside the house, this cool hack is 100% mess-free. And it’s so easy to make!
This time I used Gatorade but if you want to make them healthier, use natural fruit juices. Orange juice, apple juice, carrot juice or even homemade lemonade. Any liquid will work magically!
You need a big Ziplock bag with ice and salt and a small Ziplock bag for the juice inside. And shake, shake, shake for about 5 minutes. This is the trick for making your own slushies without a blender. The ice and salt will turn any liquid into an Icee within minutes.
This homemade slushie recipe is also a great science experiment for the kids. Get them involved in the process. They can pretend to have superpowers like Queen Elsa from Frozen! A simple, refreshing idea for the entire family to enjoy.
Tips:
- Get Reusable Silicone Straws. They are very easy to clean, eco-friendly, and super safe for hot and cold drinks.
- Experiment with different recipes to create new slushie flavors. For example, use the basic recipe from these tropical ice pops or strawberry chia ice pops to make a beachy-themed slushie!
- Make your own healthier homemade lemonade slushie by squeezing about 4-6 fresh lemons into 5 cups of cold water. Use stevia to sweeten it instead of sugar.
FAQs
Do you really put the ice and salt in the same bag to make DIY slushies?
Since there was some confusion about this, let me explain. YES, you put the ice and salt in the same bag. NO, you won’t be drinking the salt. The combination of ice and salt in that bag is what causes the reaction that turns your juice into a slushie. Once reaches the consistency that you want, you just pour the slush into a cup and discard the ice/salt mixture.
What kind of juice do you need to make slushies?
Anything goes!
Can you make slushies with other liquids aside from juice?
As mentioned above, any liquid works with this magic slushie hack. We stick with healthier options, like fruit juice, though.
Can you store slushies in the freezer?
For best results, drink your slushie right away. That said, yes, you can store it in the freezer, but you’ll want to let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before you drink it. Just keep an eye on it and wait for it to get back to a slushy-like consistency.

Yes. Ice mixed with the juice or liquid you are adding.

I was skeptical about whether or not this would work but I live in a hot city and my desire for iced coffee slushie was enough to get me to try it 😁
It definitely works, I didn’t even have to shake for a full five minutes. I had also worried that maybe the coffee would be too dense for this to work, but no problems at all.
Only thing is I recommend doing the shaking over a sink or large bowl since sometimes the bag can start to leak a little.

I was surprised it worked! The only thing i would say is put maybe 1 tablespoon because I put 2 tablespoons of salt and it was so salty I couldn’t drink it! Otherwise it was fine!
