Simple Kitchen Tools That Make Your Life Easier and Healthier
I am back from vacation and this week I am determined to get back to eating as healthy as possible. While we try to stick to our healthy eating goals even when we’re away from home, let’s be honest, it’s hard! We all slip up on vacation, right? That’s okay! Don’t let it get you down. Just recommit to a better lifestyle and move forward. For me, that means means avoiding processed foods, sugar, and other not-so-good junk.
I am also happy to report I recently went to the doctor for a checkup, and all my tests came out PERFECT! It makes me feel so happy to know eating healthy is so worth it. The biggest reward is your health….and feeling great…. the most important things in life to me.
I also want my family to eat nutritious foods. Homemade meals made from scratch. Lots of fruits and veggies. I try hard to teach my two kids healthy eating habits. I am always introducing new flavors and trying new recipes. That’s why I love these inexpensive gadgets that make it easier to eat healthier. You actually do need a few tools to make it easier to cook healthy meals. Take a look and check out some tips on how to make the best use of them!
7 Inexpensive Gadgets That Make It Easier To Eat Healthier
All of these wonderful kitchen tools are both affordable and versatile. Grab one or grab them all! You won’t regret it, I promise!
One quick note, the links below are affiliate links. If you make a purchase through them, I receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. Enjoy!
1. A SPIRALIZER, to turn vegetables into pasta.
One of my favorite gadgets that make it easier to eat healthier, the spiralizer makes it a cinch to swap out the pasta for better-for-you veggies in your favorite recipes. In just minutes, you can turn zucchini, carrots, parsnips, and even beets into “noodles.” If you grab my favorite model by Mueller, it comes with other blades to make veggie ribbons, chips and more.
What to do with it:
The obvious- replace all of the pasta in your favorite dish with healthier veggies. I recommend starting with zucchini or eggplant. Both have a great texture that works fabulously in traditional pasta dishes. If you have super picky eaters, try swapping out half of the pasta for veggies and work your way up from there. The “noodles” go great with my Super Green Spinach Avocado Basil Raw Pesto.
It’s not just for making healthier pasta, though. Use it to make a fun spiral salad for kids! Picky eaters are more likely to try new healthy foods when you make it fun. Check out these 15 recipes to cook with your spiralizer for more ideas.
2. A SLOW COOKER, for cooking fantastic homemade balanced meals with zero effort.
The slow cooker is such a wonderful tool to have in your kitchen and totally eliminates the “I don’t have time to make healthy meals” excuse. The best part? You don’t have to buy the most expensive one. There are many available for under $50.00, like this Hamilton Beach slow cooker on Amazon (it has awesome reviews).
What do to with it:
What can you do with a slow cooker? Perhaps the better question is what can’t you do! For an easy meal, just add your choice of protein, some vegetables, and a few spices, and turn on it on. You are done! Meats come out super juicy and the vegetables extra tender. See my Comforting Organic Grass Fed Beef Stew recipe for inspiration. Eating Well also has a huge selection of healthy slow cooker recipes, so check those out.
3. A MANDOLINE, for easy slicing and making veggie chips.
Even if you took my advice and grabbed the spiralizer above, you’ll still want to add a mandolin to you list of healthy eating gadgets to keep on hand. This super sharp tool makes slicing fruits and veggies a cinch. Saves you time and makes you eat more wholesome produce. I like the OXO because it’s compact (you can store it in a drawer) but still has all the most important features of a pricier and larger model.
What do to with it:
You can use it for long slices, or for making veggie chips, like my The Best Homemade Zucchini Parmesan Chips recipe. You can also use it to slice fruits like apples and pears into fun-size chips to pack in your kids’ lunches. Need more ideas? Check out these 30 healthy mandolin recipes!
4. A STEAMER BASKET,to preserve all the nutrition.
The best way to cook your veggies to preserve their nutrition content, is steaming. Boiling and frying takes away a big percentage of all the goodness. A study published in the November 2003 issue of the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture found that broccoli cooked in the microwave lost up to 97 percent of its antioxidant content but lost only 11 percent when it was steamed. It also works perfect for cooking fish.
What to make with it:
Try this inexpensive gadget to make one of my favorite recipes: Broccoli Cauliflower Nuggets. It’s also great for steaming fish and other meats! If you’re feeling adventurous, try this Cantonese Steamed Fish recipe.
5. A set of FOOD HUGGERS,for keeping produce fresh after you’ve cut into it.
Sure, it won’t slice, dice, or cook for you, but these inexpensive gadgets will still make eating healthier easier by keeping those fruits and veggies fresh longer. Plus, they seriously help cut down on food waste, something that our country has way too much of already. The compact silicone food huggers do exactly what the name implies- they “hug” your produce so it doesn’t go bad so fast.
What to do with it:
I always drink lemon water in the mornings. The problem is I only use half a lemon and the other half always goes bad. Now that I have my food huggers, I can keep half of the lemon fresh for the following day. The same thing applies to cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, or any other piece of produce left when you cook. Don’t waste real food! See my detox water recipes if you are interested in putting your food huggers to great use!
6. A Grinder for cutting fresh herbs and giving your meals extra flavor.
Sure, it looks like a coffee grinder (and, well, it is) but it’s also so much more than that! Use it to grind herbs and spices to add flavor to your healthy meals. Yes, there are actual herb grinders out there, but they’re either really expensive or have pretty bad reviews. I love using fresh herbs. My meals come out full of flavor!

7. A MUFFIN PAN,for making breakfast, lunch or dinners.
This is one of my favorite gadgets. A muffin pan is not just for baking sugar-loaded muffins and cupcakes. It’s incredibly useful for making super healthy and totally portable meals, too. It is inexpensive and super practical. A must have if you have kids and want to give them healthy and creative choices. I recommend one made with 100% silicone. They are super easy to clean and use.
What to make with it:
Need to eat breakfast on the go? Make Easy Breezy Super Healthy Breakfast Egg Muffins! For a fun healthy dinner that kids will love, you can also try these vegan meatloaf muffins. Get creative! Make taco muffins, pizza muffins, pretty much anything that you can bake in the oven can be “muffinized!” Seriously, you’d be surprised. You can also use it to create perfectly portioned side dishes.
